CREATING CHANGE — ONE HEART AT A TIME
Friday February 15: Transference and Group Process?
An Introduction to Group, Transference, and Countertransference
Obtain an in depth understanding of the role the therapist plays in eliciting transference and its importance in personal growth and healing. Trainees learn through demonstration and experiential exercises, using both verbal and body therapy techniques. In addition, character structures, personality types, and DSM diagnoses are explored in terms of the maladaptive behaviors that clients tend to present due to transference (I am right, you are wrong; I am weak, take care of me).
Specialized topics relating to group leadership include transference, somatic, body mind therapy, sexual feelings, and countertransference (the manipulative therapist, the helpless therapist, the know-it-all therapist). Practice sessions help trainees to gain experience with transference in both group and individual processes.
The day ends with a discussion of group methodology, including the practical matters of ethics, guidelines, and selection of members.
